Gin Rummy

It's great to get involved in card games. They can be such fun whether it is a card game you play by yourself or a group game. One of my favourite games is Gin Rummy. It's quite simple to play. This hub will teach you how to play gin rummy.

How to play Gin Rummy

1. Pick a dealer. 10 cards are dealt to each player, alternating between each card. The players may look at and sort their cards. 2. Turn over the top card on the deck. This forms the discard pile. The remainder of the deck goes face down on the table to form the stock. First turn goes to the player who did not deal. 3. Begin by drawing a card either from the top of the deck or the discard pile and adding it to your hand. If you draw from the deck, do not show the other players your card. 4. Discard one card from your hand. You may not throw away a card that was just drawn from the discard pile; however, you may throw a card just drawn from the deck. 5. To end the hand, throw one card away face down and lay down your sets and runs. The value of unmatched cards must be 10 points or less. You may end the game on any turn, including the first, but you do not have to end the hand when you meet the requirements. If you lay down your hand with no unmatched cards, you get a special bonus for "going gin." 6. The remaining player lays down their hand in sets and runs, and is allowed to lay off by extending runs or adding a fourth card to a set of the opponent. However, if the first player goes gin, the opponent is not allowed to lay off any cards. 7. Score your hand. If the player who laid down has a lower score, they score the difference in the two hands. If the two counts are equal or the player who laid down has a higher score, the opponent scores the difference between the two hands plus a 10-point bonus. If a player goes gin, they earn a 20 point bonus plus any unmatched cards in the opponent's hand. If the opponent has no unmatched cards, the player who went gin still earns 20 points. 8. The game ends when one player reaches 100 points. The winner gains a 100-point bonus for winning, unless the loser did not score at all, in which case the bonus is 200 points. Both players gain 20 points for each winning hand, totalled at the end of the game, not at the end of each hand. If you are playing for money or tokens, the loser pays the winner the difference between the scores.
