Cycle Helmet Guide

Cycling is a great activity but you must do your best to remain safe. That includes protecting your head should you crash. What you need to wear is a good cycle helmet. This hub has information about cycle helmets and some great cycle helmets to buy.

Always ride with a properly fitted helmet If you ever crash while you're riding, your cycle helmet may save you from serious head injury.

That's why it's compulsory to wear one, every time you're riding.

But just wearing a helmet isn't enough. Unless you wear it properly it won't be of as much use at the critical moment. Never ride with a wobbly helmet. Properly = firmly A proper fit is a firm fit. You'll know it's right if your helmet doesn't wobble or move around.

Getting the right fit First your helmet must be the correct size. Then, it has to be in the right position on your head; flat and square.

Not tilted forward so it covers your eyes.

Not tilted back so your forehead is uncovered.

Not tilted to either side so it uncovers the side of your head.

Adjusting the straps correctly Loosen all the straps, and then put your helmet on. It's best to get someone to help with the adjusting.

1. Start with the chin strap. Adjust it so the fastener or buckle is under your chin, and the strap feels firm. You should still be able to open your mouth and breathe normally. 2. Adjust the back straps so they meet the chin straps just below each ear lobe. Make sure they're firm, but not so tight that they pull the chin strap out of line. It should stay as straight as possible.

Some helmets have a one-piece chin and back strap instead of separate back straps. Others only have a chin strap. Whatever type you have, always make sure you read the manufacturer's fitting instructions carefully.

If the helmet still feels loose... ...you may need to fit adjuster pads. Choose the thinnest pads possible - no more than 1cm thick. Otherwise, if you're in a crash, they'll let your head move around in the helmet too much.

Points to watch for:

* If the helmet is too large, or the adjuster pads are too thin, or there are too few of them fitted, it may not be able to be securely fastened on the wearer's head. This may result in the wearer's view being partly obscured by the front of the helmet, impaired hearing, or the helmet becoming dislodged during a crash or fall. * Young children may not be able to release the buckle and could become distressed. Therefore it is recommended that young children be supervised at all times.
